The Challenges

Panera is well known, but it is no longer an obvious choice.

  • Our research framed Panera as a brand that under-indexed with younger consumers and could become a fallback rather than a destination.
  • Economic pressure was raising expectations for value, while competitors were giving customers more ways to balance price, speed, and quality. Panera needed to make its own payoff clearer.

Benefits

Benefits were hard to see.

Nutrition information was available, but customers had to find and interpret it.

Brand

Lacks a signature icon

Panera is lacking brand reputation and iconic food item that people can link to.

Choice

Building a meal took too many decisions.

Current Panera bundle meal, You Pick 2, asked customers to assemble their own combination through 35+ items

Tactics

Tactics to Make Panera easier to choose

01 / Nutritional Value

Put the benefit where the choice happens

  • Currently, customers could access nutrition information, but finding and interpreting it added steps to the decision.
  • This tactic is designed to surface relevant nutritional facts directly on product listings and ordering touchpoints. Develop a consistent cue system to indicate nutritional value. Therefore, customers can see and compare relevant information while choosing their meal.

Current Issue

Menu tells guests what a meal costs them, not what it gives them.

Solution

Panera already has relevant benefits, it needs to surface them at the moment of choice.

02 / Soup Duo

Turn Choice into a Signature

  • With 200+ menu and customization options, Panera gives customers flexibility, but also increases the effort required to choose.
  • Across bread, sandwiches, salads, soups, and more, the brand lacks one iconic offering that immediately says Panera.

Current Issue

The breadth of choice creates friction during decision-making, while the lack of a distinctive hero item makes the brand harder to immediately recognize through its food.
